Little Shop of Horrors (Posted 7/21/07)
Deyrolle is a 170something-year-old taxidermy shop, and the place I would someday like my dead body to emptied and restuffed. (With my arms up, I think I would make a great coat rack.) Actually, they don’t stuff humans, but they do stuff—and have stuffed—just about every other mammal you can think of. Like chimpanzees and gazelles and horses, oh my!

And donkeys!

And peacocks!

And lions!

And bunnies and chicks!

Here’s where the sales clerk told me I wasn’t allowed to take photos, so I can’t show you the zebra, elephant, dog, and all the other still unlife. Many of the critters were for sale, but not cheap. Even a pansy little canary was upwards of 250 euros. I did find something that I loved and could afford: it was a series of fetal chicks, during various stages of development. (I thought it would look great in my kitchen.) The pricetag read 100 euros, so I was jazzed and asked the sales clerk to take it out for me, but he told me it was part of their collection and not for sale. Bummer! I might go back and get a few bumblebees, though. They were only 6 euros a pop.
